IDS will work without a license, but Vehicle Communications will not.

When There is No License

When you do not have a license IDS screen prompts will notify you that you do not have one and give you the option to get one by taking you to the following screen: In Step 1, obtain an IDS Activation Code by following the instructions on the screen that are applicable to your market or proceed directly to Step 2 if you already have an Activation Code. Return to the above screen to complete Step 2. Select the Activate Production License button and enter the Activation Code in the screen below. IDS will communicate with the License Server if you are online to complete the activation process. Follow any instructions on IDS, if prompted to do so. Otherwise, you will see the following message that your license activated successfully. If there was a problem, for example the wrong code was entered, you would see a message like the one below. This screen allows you to re-enter a different Activation Code and select the Retry button to try again.

The activation of a license can be done at any time by going to the System Utilities Page and selecting License Management and then Activate a License as shown below.
